“Maybe”
A Warrior’s Tale
There was once a warrior with a magnificent horse.
All the people said, “you are lucky to have such a horse”.
To this, the warrior replied “maybe”.
One day the horse broke his tether and ran away.
All the people said “You are unlucky to have lost such a magnificent horse.
To this, the warrior replied “maybe”.
Then the horse returned with five beautiful mares and all the people said “you are lucky to have these beautiful mares.
To this, the warrior replied “maybe”.
Then the warrior’s son fell off of one of the mares and broke his leg.
To this, the people said, “you were unlucky that your son broke his leg”.
To this, the warrior replied “maybe”.
Then the war chief led a raid against the Pawnee but it ended in disaster and most of the men were killed.
The man’s son did not go on the raid because of his broken leg.
All the people said “you are lucky that your son’s leg was broken and that he was not killed along with the other young men.
To this, the warrior replied “maybe”.
